First Grade Supply List

Hello! My name is Betsy Hatt and I came to Spero Academy in September 2016 as the new 1st grade teacher.

This year we will be busy in first grade learning many new things!

In reading we will work on identifying story elements like the main idea, characters, setting and details of a story.  In math we will learn how to add, subtract, tell time, identify and name different fractional parts as well as various values of coins and paper money.  In science we will study lifecycles of mealworms and butterflies, learn about weather, and explore different animal and human habitats. In social studies we will learn about different people and cultures as well as learn about citizenship and economics.

Prior to Spero Academy, I worked as a teacher in the Minneapolis Public Schools where I taught 2nd grade, a 3/4 split classroom, as well as 4th grade, all at Jefferson Community School in south Minneapolis.

I received my initial teaching licensure in Elementary Education as well as my Master of Arts in Teacher Education in 2007, after completing coursework at the University of St. Thomas. I have since returned to complete additional coursework and have earned additional teaching licenses in English as a Second Language as well as Spanish and middle school English.

As a teacher I believe in teaching to the whole child. I strive to meet each child where they are at in their learning while delivering an engaging, standards-based curriculum that will allow each child to achieve academic, social and emotional success.

One fun fact about me: I didn't learn to drive until I turned 30. I grew up in downtown Minneapolis and was raised riding the city bus!

Ms. Kayla and Mr. Aaron are the returning 1st grade paraprofessionals for 2017-2018.  Kayla came to Spero in November 2016 and Aaron began working in March 2017.  I could not do what I do everyday without their help and we all look forward to working with you and your child to make this a year a wonderful 1st grade experience.
